Get Help
I am a volunteer for Moms Demand Action and the Be SMART program is what really got me passionate about suicide prevention awareness. The role of guns in suicide is not to be ignored and safe storage or removing guns from homes can truly save so many lives.
But I also recognize there are other ways to prevent suicide and knowing about these resources is vital to save lives.
988
The 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, free, and confidential support for people in distress.
988 isn't just for emergencies. You can call anytime no matter what problems you are dealing with. If you need someone to talk to for emotional support, either for yourself or to talk about how you can help someone you care about, call the Lifeline.
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
This is a great website for learning about suicide prevention. Learn the statistics for your state, learn about your state's laws, find out risk factors and how to recognize signs.
Being informed is such a powerful tool and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has a lot of great information for that.
Be SMART
Be SMART was created to promote responsible gun ownership in order to reduce deaths or injuries that result from a child or teen having access to a gun.
The R in Be SMART does stand for Recognize the role of guns in suicide, but the program is about a lot more.
Find out how to have that awkward conversation about guns and storage when you are sending your child into a friend's home. It's so important to normalize that conversation so a child or teen isn't able to access a firearm and make an irreversible decision.
